The universe is expanding, that’s a known fact. According to the Big Bang Theory (not the series, the actual scientific theory), the universe originated in an unimaginably massive Big Bang and the material was thrown out from one point.
It is therefore easy to imagine that the universe has expanded over the last 13.8 billion years. An explosion of any kind throws material out, so expansion makes perfect sense.
Interestingly, instead of slowing down, the expansion of the universe has accelerated. The reason for this is Dark Energy. This form of mysterious energy has a repulsive effect greater than gravity and thus causes the entire universe to expand.
But now scientists believe that the universe will begin to shrink remarkably soon. They have presented their research in the journal Scientific Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The team of scientists behind this study has built a model of the universe in which dark energy is not a constant force of nature, but a formation called quintessence. This formation may disintegrate over time.

So scientists say the acceleration of the universe will stop in the next 65 million years. Over the next 100 million years (a very short time when looking at space), it will stop expanding and begin to shrink. And billions of years later, the universe may meet its death (or rebirth of time and space).
