TDSB will change the process of admission to specialized programs, schools based on “interests” – Toronto

The Toronto School Board (TDSB) says it is looking for a change in the way students are admitted to specialized programs and schools, such as those adapted for the arts, athletics and skilled crafts.

A TDSB report states that admission will move away from the demonstrated strength and / or ability of the skill and will prioritize the student’s interest in a particular program or school.

Usually, students who want to go to a specialized school or enter a specialized program must pass an audition, send certain materials, take entrance exams or have certain notes on the report.

Instead, the report indicates a change in criteria such as statements or expressions of interest, as well as reflections or demonstrations of creativity. For athletic programs, they offer training schedules and letters to coaches.

“All students will have equal access to both local and centralized programs that support their interest and success,” the report said.

“The changes and decisions outlined in the policy are aimed at tackling data from decades that consistently show that not all students have benefited fairly from our specialized programs.”

The report states, based on feedback and research, that some of the previous processes of screening tools have excluded some students from certain programs. He uses art programs as an example that some of these programs may not recognize all forms of dance according to current admission criteria.

The implementation of the new policy is scheduled for September 2023 school year, subject to approval, the report said.

To prepare for implementation, the TDSB set out new policies and procedures. For example, enrollment restrictions for centralized programs / schools must be introduced by October 2022.

In addition, applications will need “standard interest-based admission criteria and a centralized online application” by November or December 2022.
