Police in Canada spotted a drone crossing the border from the United States carrying a shopping bag with nearly a dozen pistols – but only after the pilot crashed the device into a nearby tree.
Officials in southern Ontario were called to a home near the city of Port Lambton, northeast of Detroit, after residents said they saw a stranger maneuvering a commercial drone.
“Our neighbor had spotted someone in our yard in the middle of the night and he had a remote control,” Christine Aquwood told CTV News. “He wasn’t sure what was going on.”
But the drone operator lost control of the drone and sent it to crash into a tree before fleeing into a waiting vehicle.
Police found the drone with a bucket truck and that a plastic shopping bag had been attached with metal rifles and electrical tape.
Inside, police found 11 pistols – most of which were weapons banned in Canada. One of the images shared by the police appears to indicate that the serial numbers of the black pistol have been polished.

Officials suspect the drone was traveling east of Michigan across the St. Clair River, which marks the border between Canada and the United States. But police still do not know who piloted the drone and for whom the illegal delivery was intended.
Many of the guns used to commit crimes in Canada are secret in the country from the United States. In the past, smugglers have used transport trucks, passenger vehicles and planes to escape from authorities.
The use of a drone suggests that groups may be trying out new strategies, but it is unclear whether Friday’s discovery is the first time a drone has been used. The Ontario Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
