Toronto has acquired a new fire truck that will take fire crews to new heights.
On Wednesday, Mayor John Torrey and Fire Chief Matthew Peg unveiled the 70-meter Bronto Skylift articulated air system, called Tower 1.
The fire extinguisher is the tallest in North America and when fully stretched can reach a height of 70 meters or 230 feet, which is approximately 22 floors.
“When you give the fire service this new height they need to reach new parts of our growing city, it makes it much more secure that we can provide the city’s residents as a whole with the kind of protection they need it, “Tori told a news conference.
Tower 1 extends to double the height of Toronto’s next tallest aviation facility, which can reach 11 floors.
The device also provides improved capabilities for extinguishing air fires, as the main flow nozzle at the end of the platform is capable of draining up to 3800 liters of water per minute.
The truck is a much-needed addition to Toronto’s fire department, with approximately 2,500 high-rise buildings in the city, the second largest high-rise building in North America after New York.
“Responding to fires and other emergencies in Toronto poses challenges that are unique to other cities. A truly vertical city, our teams require these specialized tools to respond fully and effectively to these incidents in a high-density environment where our residents live, work and play day and night, ”Peg said.
The truck will be located in the center of 339 Queens Quay W., where it has the highest density of tall buildings, but will respond to most areas of the city when needed.
