Charles Oliveira may not be the UFC lightweight champion, but there is no doubt who is the best lightweight champion on the planet. Oliveira defeated Justin Getty in a fierce rush of sugar at UFC 274 on Saturday night.
Things, as usual during this lightweight title campaign, didn’t look good for Oliveira early. Gaethje missed Oliveira twice in the first round: first with the right uppercut and then with the left hook. The Highlight was careful not to engage with Oliveira on the ground and greeted him on his feet. Gaethje’s unwillingness to commit to land and pounds led to his eventual death. Oliveira found support and responded with relentless pressure. Combined boxing, knees, flying knees and jumping front kick. “Do Bronx” found at home the right hand sitting on Gaethje. Oliveira immediately spun her net on the ground, moving from suffocation from back to shoulder to a triangular glove before sinking into suffocation from behind, forcing Gaethje to tap.
UFC President Dana White was noticeably absent from the Octagon because of her traditional role of clasping the UFC title around the winner’s waist. Oliveira, who was the defending UFC lightweight champion earlier this week, was stripped of his belt after losing half a pound. There were rumors circulating among many fighters this week that the inaccurate scales given to the fighters in advance had contributed to weight problems. Nevertheless, Oliveira is no longer the UFC lightweight champion, but she will compete for him in her next fight.
“Hey, there’s something here,” Oliveira teased during a post-battle interview with the help of an interpreter. “This is a message to the whole division. I am a problem for the whole division. Look at this team, look at me. I am the enlightened one. This is my title. It must be here.
“Hey, Connor McGregor, are you coming or running?”

Oliveira extended his winning streak to 11 and finished with Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, Kevin Lee and many others during that period. The only small drawback – if you can call it that – is the clear victory with a unanimous decision over Tony Ferguson in December 2020.
White later confirmed that Oliveira will be fighting for the title on her next outing. White has no doubt that Oliveira is the uncrowned division champion. Unfortunately, the rules are the rules.
“He’s the man,” White told reporters at a news conference after UFC 274. He didn’t gain weight. We have rules. He didn’t do the weight. The belt is free, but I am sure that in the minds of the media and fans of the battles, Oliveira is a champion. But technically he’s the number one contender now. “
Elsewhere, Carla Esparza regained her women’s straw title after nearly eight years off the top of the mountain. The cookie monster pointed out Rose Namayunas in two of the three referee cards to take the belt, which she won for the first time in 2014. Plus, Michael Chandler gave fans one of the nastiest knockouts in recent memory with his hit in front of Tony Ferguson.
