Abortion protests are being held outside the homes of SCOTUS judges

Pro-choice activists protested on Saturday night in front of the homes of conservative Supreme Court justices Brett Cavanaugh and John Roberts, days after an unprecedented leak revealed a plan by the country’s highest court to overturn Rowe against Wade.

About 100 protesters raising signs and chanting slogans marched from Judge Brett Cavanaugh’s home in Maryland to the home of Chief Justice John Roberts nearby, Bloomberg reported. After returning to Cavanan’s Chevy Chase’s home, police instructed the group protesters to scatter, according to the newspaper.

“The courtesy time is over, man,” protest organizer Lacey Wooten-Howe, 39, told Bloomberg. “Being polite doesn’t get you anywhere.”

A video posted on Twitter shows a group gathered during a rainy, cool evening in front of Roberts’ home chanting, “The whole world is watching!” And “We will not go back,” as well as “My body, my choice.” on the street of Cavanaugh.

It was unclear whether Cavanaugh or Roberts or their families were at home during the protests, according to Bloomberg.

The gathering in front of Cavanaugh’s home was met with disapproval from at least one person who passed by, according to a report.

“Which I don’t agree with,” the man told the protest, according to The Washington Post. “I think you are voting and expanding the court. You don’t go to a man’s house. “

Cavanaugh is among five judges Politico said Monday had voted in advance to repeal Rowe v. Wade, a remarkable 1973 decision that legalized abortion across the country. The majority opinion was written by Judge Samuel Alito, and it was unclear how Roberts – he ordered an investigation into the unprecedented leak and called it a “blatant breach of trust” – planned to vote.

The leaked decision proved controversial, sparking outrage from democratic politicians and liberals across the country.

Half of American voters oppose the repeal of the landmark abortion decision of 1973, while 28% believe it should be repealed, according to a poll released Wednesday.

And it’s not just Democrats who have been unhappy with the leak.

Meanwhile, Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) Suggested that the expiration of the draft opinion published by Politico on Monday was intended to “intimidate” judges to reconsider their votes.

Saturday night’s demonstration comes as the Ruth Send Us group prepares to protest what it called “the homes of six extremist judges” on Wednesday.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki on Thursday did not comment on the protests in front of the House of Justice, while urging those involved to remain peaceful.

“I think our opinion here is that peaceful protests have a long history in the United States,” she told a news briefing. “And we have certainly encouraged people to keep the peace and not resort to any level of violence.”

“The president’s opinion is that there is a lot of passion, a lot of fear, a lot of sadness from many, many people in this country for what they saw in this leaked document,” Psaki added. “Obviously we want people’s privacy to be respected. We want people to protest peacefully if they want to protest. That would definitely be the president’s opinion. “

The demonstration came after thousands of protesters gathered in Foley Square in New York on Tuesday to protest the expired decision.
