CHICAGO (CBS) – Blood-curdling screams were heard when relatives learned that the ambitious rapper Brandon Slater was shot and killed right in front of his mother’s house on Saturday – just one day before Mother’s Day.
Family members say the 26-year-old has just picked up a cake for Mother’s Day. His mother, Diane Archer, was on brunch for Mother’s Day, where people prayed for her after losing her other son in December.
“I’m so tired of this nonsense,” she said. “Something needs to be done.”
The shooting took place in block 11,600 in South Lowe around 2:45 p.m. Chicago police say someone stopped in an unknown vehicle. Someone inside came out and started firing, hitting Slater, a 27-year-old man and a 64-year-old man who were nearby.
Slater was hit several times and pronounced dead on the spot. The 27-year-old man was kicked in the leg and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition.
The 64-year-old man, identified as Larry Purnell, was mowing the family’s lawn, as they say he does every week. He was hit in the chest and transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, but later died.
Archer said he was preparing for Mother’s Day.
“We were just planning a dinner for Mother’s Day, which I cooked, which I always make. And I just left him, “she said.
“It’s not good for Mother’s Day, but it seems to be something for Mother’s Day in Chicago,” said street pastor Donovan Price.
“I’m sick and I’m tired of seeing this on the news every day all day and nobody does anything,” Archer said. “My first son was taken away on December 14, 2021. His name was Sheridan Freeman.”
She has said several times that she cannot go through this again, but now she must be strong for her four daughters and Slater’s youngest son.
No one has been detained while police are investigating.
