Michigan’s attorney general from the Democratic Party warned Sunday that Republican-led states will begin investigating and prosecuting abortion providers and abortion patients if Rowe v. Wade is overturned by the Supreme Court.
Attorney General Dana Nessel told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that while she “refuses to enforce laws that could endanger women’s health,” she believes more conservative service leaders across the country will criminalize abortion care. , which may include prosecuting doctors as well as women taking abortion pills.
“We are talking not only about throwing suppliers and anyone who works for the provider under theories of aiding and abetting in prison, but also about the women themselves who have had abortions through abortion drugs,” Nessel told moderator Chuck Todd. “It’s a really scary set of circumstances for women here in Michigan.”
An expired draft statement released by Politico last week showed that the Conservative majority in the Supreme Court was in favor of overturning the remarkable 1973 decision legalizing abortion.
About 23 states have abortion bans that will take effect if Rowe v. Wade is repealed, while some, such as Oklahoma and Texas, have passed laws that criminalize abortion and make it a crime.

Michigan also has a law banning abortion and making it a crime to have an abortion procedure that will take effect if Rowe v. Wade is overturned. Last week, Nessel warned that district attorneys could still enforce the law, even if she didn’t, according to Michigan Public Radio.
Nessel warned on Sunday that doctors and abortion providers would be “very scared” if the court precedent was overturned. She called on Democrats to codify abortion rights in state law.
“If we have enough people who are interested in this issue and go out to vote in November, I see that will happen,” she said, codifying it in law. “Both forces need to emerge to better protect women in our country.
