Dr. Strange in the multiverse of madness wins $ 185 million domestic weekend box office

“Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” got off to a great start as it not only won the domestic weekend box office with $ 185 million in ticket sales, but also secured the 11th best internal opening of all time.

According to Variety, Doctor Strange 2 surpassed all other MCU films from the COVID era, except for Spider-Man: No Way Home for $ 260 million, which was the second largest internal opening of all time.

That means it’s ahead of the Black Widow’s $ 80 million and $ 60 million Disney + debut, Shang-Chi’s debut and the $ 75 million Legend of the Ten Rings, and Eternals’ $ 71 million debut. It also became the biggest opening of 2022, dethroning Batman’s first $ 134 million weekend.

Internationally, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness earned another $ 265 million, bringing the total to $ 450 million. If the film has to cross the $ 1 billion mark worldwide, it will have to do so without China, Russia or Ukraine, as the film is unlikely to open there.

The original Doctor Strange won $ 85 million in its first weekend in 2016, and the sequel went through that on Friday alone with $ 90 million in ticket sales. “Doctor Strange” ended its theatrical performance with $ 232 million in the country and $ 677 million worldwide.

Doctor Strange 2 cost $ 200 million to produce, and premium formats played a major role in recovering production and marketing costs. With $ 33 million from IMAX alone, 36% of total Doctor Strange 2 ticket sales come from these premium formats.

In our review of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” we said, “Sometimes the script is just amazing and there are weird moments that are weird because of it, without adding anything to the character’s overall knowledge or development.” That said, there is a result you have to die for, some gorgeous performances and fans will never get bored! “

After two weeks at the top of the box office, the Bad guys settled for second place this time with $ 9.7 million. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 finished third with $ 6.2 million, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore finished fourth with $ 3.8 million, and Everything Everywhere All at Once rounded out the top five with $ 2.7 million.
