Nick Cave has announced that his eldest son Jethro has died at the age of 31.
In a brief statement, he wrote: “It is with great sadness that I can confirm that my son Jethro has died. We will be grateful for the privacy of the family at this time. “
Jethro was born in 1991 to Nick and his mother Beau Lazenby. Nick Luke’s second son was born 10 days after Jethro to Nick’s first wife, Vivian Carneiro; Jethro grew up in Australia and later said he did not meet Nick until he was seven or eight years old. “It was a difficult time, but it turned out to be great,” Nick told a reporter in 2008. “Unfortunately, I didn’t have much contact with Jethro in the early years, but now I have a great relationship with him.” 2012 interview: “It didn’t start so great when I had all this nonsense with my father and was in his shadow.”
After moving to the UK as a young man, Jethro became a model, including for Balenciaga and Versace; Hedy Sliman, Celine’s creative director, filmed it. He also started his own music projects.
He was found guilty of an illegal assault in April after physically assaulting his mother in March. His lawyer said he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He was in jail and released last weekend. He had previously been convicted of assaulting his then-girlfriend in 2018.
Cave has already killed two of his four sons after his son Arthur died at the age of 15 after falling off a cliff near Brighton. In a statement announcing his death, he was described as a “handsome, happy, loving boy,” and the impact of his death on Cave was explored in the documentary One More Time With Feeling, which focuses on the Skeleton Tree album.
