Officers received a signal that the couple was staying at a hotel in Indiana, almost 300 miles from the place of their escape from prison.
Surveillance officers then spotted Vicki White leaving the hotel with Casey White and went after him.
A squad of U.S. marshals eventually boarded the Cadillac they were driving, causing the “broken” vehicle to overturn.
Vicki White was found inside with a gunshot wound to the head. She was taken to hospital, where she later died of her injuries, authorities said.
Chris Suecker, a former FBI assistant director, told CNN that this was the case of someone “looking for love in the wrong places.”
“You have this guard who falls in love with a prisoner who probably prepared her for a period of time,” Mr Swecker said, adding: “to agree with her on this escape.”
The national search for the couple began on April 29, when a prison official told colleagues at Lauderdale County, Alabama, that he would take White to a mental health court.
It later emerged that a mental health assessment of White, who was serving a 75-year sentence for kidnapping, burglary and attempted murder, was not scheduled.
Public sketches of the couple’s detectives note the big difference in height between 6 feet and 9 inches tall, a murder suspect and his suspected lover, who is a full foot shorter, at 5 feet and 4 inches.
Detectives also released images of Casey White’s numerous tattoos, including one involving a white gang prison gang.
He was due to stand trial next month for the death of a 58-year-old woman with a knife in 2015, and could face the death penalty if convicted.
Vicki White was the prison’s assistant director and had worked on the ward for 16 years with an impeccable record.
She applied for retirement the day before she disappeared with the prisoner.
Investigators also found that the 56-year-old woman sold her home in the weeks before the escape and withdrew about $ 90,000 in cash.
