Quebec bloc MP Martin Champou said his party would submit a proposal to parliament to abolish daily prayer, which begins with “Almighty God” and ends with “Amen”.

Bloc Québécois says it is time to end the daily reading of prayer in the House of Commons and replace it with a moment of reflection.

However, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau opposes the idea, saying the issue of daily prayer is not a priority for his government or Canadians.

Bloc lawmaker Martin Shampoo said his party would submit a proposal to parliament today to abolish daily prayer, which begins with “Almighty God” and ends with “Amen”.

The proposal states that the Chamber must respect the beliefs and unbeliefs of parliamentarians and the public.

However, Trudeau says the people he talks to while riding in Montreal are talking about the rising cost of living and the war in Ukraine, not the daily prayer in the House.

The Conservatives did not immediately return a request for comment, while the NDP said it would vote in favor of the Bloc’s proposal.

The reading of a prayer at the beginning of the daily session has been part of the activities of the House of Commons since 1877, but is only a standing order from 1927.
