PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – A man was shot dead by Philadelphia police in the 39th District building after he allegedly threw himself at a police officer with a screwdriver.
This happened around 9:19 on Wednesday in the building in Hunting Park.
Police say the 23-year-old suspect tried to communicate with a police officer through a protective glass, but the police officer could not hear the man – who was wearing a mask.
The employee then opened the side door of the office and then the suspect threw himself with a screwdriver, officials say.
There was a battle involving the three policemen inside.
“They tried to disarm this man as he turned the screwdriver in their direction – it was all in about 30 seconds. It was at this time that one of the officers who was in the operating room fired at least one shot at the man, hitting him in the torso, “said a Philadelphia police sergeant. Eric Grip.
One of those officers, described as a 32-year-old woman with seven years in the police force, fired his weapon.
The suspect was shot in the torso. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.
A male police officer received a head injury during a fight. Authorities believe he was injured in the fall and do not believe he was stabbed with a screwdriver.
