Ukrainians – twice in the last 24 hours – have halted Russian efforts to cross the Seversky Donets River in the Luhansk region, blowing up two pontoon bridges near Belohorivka.
A satellite image compiled by geospatial intelligence firm BlackSky shows a Russian pontoon bridge crossing the river on May 10, shortly after Ukrainian artillery shelling hit the area.
Smoke can be seen rising from the west bank of the Seversky Donets River at one end of the bridge. On the east coast, craters and smoke can also be seen on the east coast, including around Russian military vehicles that have passed through it.

A grainy video of a drone circulating on social media, geolocated and its authenticity verified by CNN, shows the consequences of the strikes. The military strikes destroyed the bridge, which can be seen half sunk into the river.
Additional photos circulating on social media, also taken by a drone, show that the Russians tried to build a second pontoon bridge across the river. This bridge was also blown up by the Ukrainians in addition to a number of military vehicles.

Passing through Ukraine’s topography – especially its rivers – has repeatedly proved to be a logistical nightmare that has hampered Russian military offensives for weeks in many parts of Ukraine. In more remote areas or in places where bridges have been blown up, they resort to the use of pontoon bridges.
These bridges have been repeatedly targeted and blown up by Ukrainian forces.
CNN previously reported that the bridge first appeared on May 8.
Sergei Haidai, Lugansk’s regional military administrator, said on Wednesday that the Russians were still trying to build bridges across the Seversky Donets River. He added that Ukrainians had blown them up many times.
