Raleigh, North Carolina – Seventeen people have been forced to flee their homes after a massive fire hit a Raleigh apartment complex on Wednesday night that burned for more than two hours.

Firefighters were called to The Oak Apartments at Block 3900 on Water Oak Drive, off New Hope Road, 9 p.m.

A total of 16 blocks in the building were affected by the fire, most with smoke and water damage, but four homes were destroyed by fire.

Raleigh Fire Chief Brian Cheryl said two people were injured in the blaze.

Neighbors told WRAL News that the fire had been burning for more than two hours before firefighters put it out. They also said the fire department had been called to the Oaks apartments several times in the past few weeks.

Firefighters did not say what caused the fire and how many apartments were damaged. It took about 45 minutes to put out the blaze, they said.

The American Red Cross was on the scene to help the homeless, including a family with two children. The organization will provide shelter, food, help items such as toiletries, health and mental services.
