HARRY DISTRICT, Texas (KTRK) – A 12-year-old boy is recovering from serious injuries after being hit by accidental bullets while sleeping during a shootout at a nearby club in northwestern Harris County, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.
SWAT was called on Thursday morning in case the suspects were still inside the club, but the scene has cleared since. No one seems to have been arrested.
Officials said between 80 and 100 shots were fired from the club across the street and the bullets went through a window in a residential home in Inwood Grove, where the child was on the couch with his 7-year-old brother.
The children’s mother spoke exclusively to ABC13. She said she heard the shots and learned that her son had been hit in the groin area.
“Last week, the shooting of a teenager because of the shoes he was wearing. Today, the shooting of a teenager while sleeping in his apartment. This should not happen and we are angry about it,” Gonzalez said on Twitter. “We will do our best to bring those responsible to justice.
Gonzalez said it was a “chaotic scene” in which authorities responded to a shooting at Block 7300 in Alabonson near Bayou Forest Drive around 2:38 a.m. Thursday.
According to the sheriff, when officers arrived, they found the 12-year-old boy with a gunshot wound. He was in good condition at the last check-up, but his injuries are serious.
Gonzalez said the boy may have been shot by an assault rifle, injuring several parts of his body.
He went on to say that between 80 and 100 shots were fired and that there may have been many shooters. “There are escape suspects armed with machine guns who shot a teenager. They pose a serious threat to public safety. Help us we identify and bring them to justice, “Gonzalez said.
Lieutenant Cedric Collier gave an update from the scene Thursday morning and said the surveillance video showed several men shooting at each other.
Collier said employees had been called to the club several times before.
“It’s just reckless and pointless. As you can see, gun violence is on the rise. It’s just pointless. This type of incident is just pointless. There’s no need for that,” Collier said.
