A Northern California police officer has been released on leave for allegedly masturbating at the family home, where he was sent for embarrassment as his unit struggled with a series of recent controversies over his staff, authorities said.

San Jose police officer Matthew Dominguez, 32, was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of exposing an indecent crime for an incident that allegedly took place on April 21.

“The accused’s behavior is beyond concern,” said Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen. “Law enforcement officers are responding in our homes to help victims of crime, not terrorizing, traumatizing and creating new victims.”

Dominguez, a four-year veteran of the force, responded with two other officers to a home for a person with a mental illness who was abused by family members. After an investigation was launched, Dominguez sent the other two officers to find the person.
