Orange County fire claims 20 homes, evacuations still in place – deadline

UPDATE, MAY 12 6pm: Firefighters say 20 homes have been destroyed and 11 damaged by a coastal fire, which is now estimated at 15%. There are still 200 acres burned, a total that has not grown since early reports.

Two firefighters were reported injured, but no details have been released, except that they are expected to be well.

.Evacuation orders for about 900 homes will be extended until Friday. Firefighters are still inspecting the area and putting out the embers they may have missed in the hotspots.

Earlier: Wealthy communities around Nigel Lagoon, California are at risk of fire tonight as strong winds caused a fire that exploded on more than 200 acres earlier in the evening.

More than a dozen houses overlooking the ocean in Laguna Nigel were on fire, and nearby communities were preparing evacuation orders if the so-called “coastal fire” progressed.

Laguna Nigel is one of the most expensive cities in Orange County, located south of Los Angeles County. It boasts an average household income of $ 108,537 by 2019. The typical home value is $ 1,294,837 for Zillow, but many homes near the beach can be much more expensive.

The fire broke out Wednesday afternoon between Laguna Nigel and Laguna Beach near a treatment plant, according to the Orange County Fire Department. At about 5 pm, the first one was on 30 acres, but only an hour later it grew to more than 200 acres. The hot heat entering the ceilings is a particular problem for firefighters.

A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for Coronado Pointe Drive, Vista Court and Via Las Rosas in Laguna Nigel. Orange County Sheriff’s Deputies went from house to house helping people evacuate.

According to them, there are about 100 structures in these areas. A warning for a voluntary evacuation has been issued for the Balboa Nice district (Portafina).

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Several water helicopters are helping to fight the flames, and the crews of fixed-wing aircraft are also helping.

An evacuation center for those seeking help has since been set up. Residents of the area can visit the Crown Valley Community Center at 29751 Crown Valley Parkway for help. The Orange County Emergency Center also set up a public information hotline to answer questions from residents. You can contact them at 714-628-7085.
