DUBAI, United Arab Emirates ⁠— The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has died at the age of 73, state news agencies reported on Friday.

Sheikh Khalifa was the country’s second Gulf president since 2004. He is credited with helping bring the UAE, a small desert sheikh of seven emirates, to world renown and leading the country through turbulent times during the financial crisis. 2008

“The Ministry of Presidential Affairs expresses its condolences to the people of the UAE, the Arab and Islamic nations and the world on the death of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE,” the WAM state news agency said in a statement.
