Ukrainian troops appear to have forced Russian troops to withdraw to Kharkiv, but analysts warn that Moscow’s forces are regrouping and preparing for a siege in the east. Meanwhile, shelling across the country continues to take lives and destroy infrastructure. On Friday, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov warned of a “new, long phase of the war.”

Kharkiv: Ukrainian forces launched an effective counterattack in the area around the northeastern city, forcing Russian troops to withdraw, but shelling continued. In Derhachi, two people were killed and four were injured after the shelling damaged a humanitarian organization, registry office, part of a clinic and an ambulance building, Kharkiv Governor Oleg Sinegubov told Telegram on Friday.
Lugansk: West of Severodonetsk, a Russian battalion crossing the Donets River was destroyed after Ukrainian forces blew up pontoon bridges on the river this week, the British Ministry of Defense confirmed on Friday. It is not clear how many Russian soldiers died.
Donetsk: Russian strikes killed one civilian and wounded a dozen others, regional governor Pavlo Kirilenko said on Friday. In the center of Donetsk, a stronghold of the Russian occupation forces, the invading forces shelled the Avdeevka Coke Plant, Ukraine’s largest coke producer.
Mariupol: In the Russian-controlled port city, occupying forces continue to bomb the Azovstal steel plant, home to the last holdings of the Ukrainian army. Ukrainian authorities say they are negotiating with the Russians to release more than three dozen wounded fighters.
