CANNABIS, UTAH – A teenager died over the weekend after a sand dune collapsed on him while digging a tunnel.
A family member called for help around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday after seeing 13-year-old Ian Spendlow trapped under the sand in Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, just outside the campsite.
Utah state park officials said Spendlow dug a tunnel in the dune country when it collapsed.
Family members, passers-by, park staff and law enforcement began digging for Spendlove and eventually found it just before 6pm under 6 1/2 feet of sand.
The first respondents performed CPR and Spendlov restored his heart rate. He was airlifted to St. George’s Regional Hospital and then to the Children’s General Hospital, but on Sunday Spendlov had not yet recovered and was pronounced dead.
“The Utah State Park Department expresses its condolences to Ian Spendlow’s friends and family affected by this tragedy,” the press release said.
The incident is under investigation.
