Vladimir Putin is taking personal control of Russia’s volatile offensive in Donbas

It is believed that the couple may interfere in the movements of Russian units containing only 700 to 1,000 soldiers.

Western officials believe that the micro-management of the war in Ukraine by Moscow may be a factor contributing to the slow progress of the Russian military in Donbass, where troops have failed to make significant territorial gains.

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, head of the British Armed Forces, told parliament on Monday that Ukraine’s survival was “guaranteed” and that he had been given clear guidance from Boris Johnson that “Putin must fail”.

“The foreign minister is talking about a network of freedom,” he said.

“If we, the responsible, democratic nations of the world, do not step up to strengthen and defend the rules and freedoms that underpin global security, then we leave this space to others who join a very different set of values.
