Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa seem to have done Liverpool a favor tonight. The charge for the Reds’ title depends on them.
As everyone knows, Liverpool need Aston Villa to score on Sunday so the Reds have a chance at the title. Their chances are slim – 18%, according to one analysis – but still very possible.
Villa, of course, travels to Manchester City. A draw or victory for the club from the Midlands opens the door for Liverpool, where three points will then take the title to Anfield. This is a big question.
This is an even bigger inquiry, given that Villa is playing tonight and City are not. Pep Guardiola will lead a relatively fresh team at home as a huge favorite against a team with only a few days off.
So all eyes were on Villa’s lineup tonight. Will players rest for Sunday? Yes, as it turned out. Steven Gerrard may have done Liverpool a great service.
Steven Gerrard does Liverpool a favor
Two names were apparently missing from Gerard’s XI tonight. Danny Ings and Philippe Coutinho started on the bench, although they were regular in the squad this season.

Emiliano Buendía took the place of the Brazilian, while Villa gave a second start in the Premier League to Carni Chuquuemeca – a player who reportedly likes Liverpool. It’s easy to feel that Gerard has been watching the players with one eye for Sunday as Villa tries to get something from City.
There is also the fact that Gerard chose to give a break to his two former Liverpool players for the match. Coincidentally, they are two players, Villa accidentally posted a photo from yesterday. And they are the two that Reds fans will hope can create something magical to bring to the Etihad.
Gerard essentially guarantees that they will perform on Sunday by leaving them here. The stage is already firmly prepared for a huge day.
