Police said they had no idea the cause of the blast while the investigation continued. At this stage it is treated as inexplicable.

Following a series of investigations, a 29-year-old man from Darlington was arrested on suspicion of producing a class B drug and causing an explosion that could be life-threatening or cause serious injury.

Now employees want to talk to 40-year-old Robert Nolan of Skelmersdale as part of their inquiries.

He is described as white, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a thin build and a Liverpool accent.

As part of the ongoing investigation, police asked to contact anyone who saw something suspicious earlier on the day of the incident or in the period immediately after the explosion. They also want to hear from anyone who has seen any suspicious vehicles in the area in the days before the explosion. They asked people to check their CCTV footage, a dashboard or a doorbell to see if they had captured anything that could help with their investigation.

Lancashire Police Department’s Sean Reddington said: “This incident has caused significant property damage and left many people displaced. Our investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion, and we will ask people to check any footage they may have covered the area to see if they have captured anything that could help us in our inquiries.

“Although we are open about what caused the explosion, we made an arrest. We now need to speak to Robert Nolan, as we believe he can help us with our inquiries. We would ask anyone who sees him or knows where he is to contact the police as soon as possible. “
