Apple’s iPhone seems to have reached its peak. At least as far as the standard model is concerned. Yes, you heard it here first. Breaking news!
Now, seriously… I know it may look like “I’m getting hot”, but before you start panicking, the good news is that Tim Cook & Co are brilliant in marketing, and Apple enjoys unparalleled brand recognition, so millions of people will still buy the iPhone 14. But now, to the not so good news (leaks and rumors) …
Apple’s latest (official) “S” model was the iPhone XS, which looked exactly like the iPhone X. Since then, the company seems to have learned an important lesson in branding, so we got the iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 – despite slight visual differences between the last two. , the “S” model was retired. Of course, we’ve had this conversation before. However, 2022 really seems to be the “S year” disguised for the vanilla iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max. On the other hand, it wouldn’t be Apple if the company didn’t have a few tricks up its sleeve designed to attract buyers.
So let’s take a look at what suggests that the iPhone 14 will be more of an iPhone 13S, but also what expected upgrades may actually make it a viable option for people with older iPhones. Maybe it will be better with a cheaper iPhone 13 or even wait for the iPhone 15?
The iPhone 14 becomes the first flagship iPhone to reuse an old processor, but Apple will get away with it
Professional class.
- iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to get a brand new A16 Bionic chip
- iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max for reuse of the same A15 Bionic processor, which is in the range of iPhone 13
This is the big news, and it’s definitely bad news for those who want the cheapest new iPhone. But! Not for the same reasons you expect … For starters, the A15 Bionic is still the fastest chip on the market, even after a number of newer versions of Qualcomm and MediaTek from September 2021. So we know that “the slow chip “argument is not the key to this coffin.
And here I see Apple ready to turn things around. Although this has not been confirmed, I expect Cupertino to actually use the iPhone 13 Pro chip for the iPhone 14 and 14 Max instead of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini.
“IPhone 14 gets Pro-grade chip!” – Apple in September. Make a note of my words.
In case you didn’t know, technically, the iPhone 13 Pro’s SoC is different and better than the iPhone 13’s because it uses an additional GPU core (disabled in the standard version). While this doesn’t really make a difference in actual use, even when it comes to heavy-duty tasks, it’s enough for Apple to say that the iPhone 14 chip isn’t the same as the iPhone 13’s, and that wouldn’t be wrong.
iPhone 14: 15-year-old creation of Steve Jobs reaches peak performance: Is this a real problem?
Maybe the slogan for Apple’s latest event should have been reserved for September 2022?
Yes and no.
Although we haven’t seen a new flagship iPhone with an old chip so far, in fact the CPU power gain during the year is not as significant as you might think. For example, the A15 Bionic chip found in the iPhone 13 series is only 7-10% faster than the A14 Bionic found in the iPhone 12 series, which is itself only 7-10% faster than its predecessor. A13 Bionic, powering iPhone 11.
Bigger differences are seen in the manufacturing process (lower is better), where the iPhone 11-iPhone 12 cycle led to a jump from 7nm to 5nm, making the iPhone 12 more efficient. However, probably due to the global shortage of chips, the iPhone 13 had to stick to the same 5nm processing. But it’s even more confusing as the iPhone 13 still manages to significantly improve its performance over its predecessor thanks to the larger batteries and ProMotion of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max (the latter breaks all records for battery life, which refers to leading telephones).
Given all this, if there’s anything to worry about when it comes to the iPhone 14’s processor, it’s whether this chip / phone will be able to enjoy the same number of iOS updates as the iPhone 14 Pro that will work of a newer 4nm SoC, compared to the 5nm SoC found in the iPhone 13.
We will know the definitive answer to this question in about five years, when Apple finally stopped sending updates to iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. However, my guess is that Apple will absolutely provide the same number of iOS to iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max is updated as the iPhone 14 Pro because they are from the same range of phones, despite the differences in hardware.
However, the important statement is:
- The old SoC on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will still be more powerful than any other chip (not Apple’s) and capable enough to give you smooth performance for the next four to five years.
- The standard iPhone (iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max) or iPhone that most people buy reaches its peak and literally peak performance – this is because Apple is trying to differentiate it from its Pro siblings, which the company needs to sell more.
iPhone 14: Same design as before, but a new iPhone 14 Max is helpful
Apple has a purple Max surprise for you!
The other obvious factor that makes the iPhone 14 iPhone 13S, I think, is that the new 2022 model is expected to reuse the same old design we saw after the iPhone 12. Yes, unlike its Pro counterparts, the modest iPhone 14 is expected to keep the famous slot, which, although iconic, is slowly going out of fashion … Of course, the saving grace for Apple here is the brand new iPhone 14 Max, which is expected to start at $ 900. Although it doesn’t make sense at first glance, this one replaces the iPhone 13 mini, ending Apple’s small attempts with small phones.
The iPhone 14 Max will have a larger 6.7-inch display and a significantly larger battery than the regular iPhone 14, which is expected to retain its 6.1-inch screen. Although 14 Max is not a completely new concept for Apple (they already have a Pro Max iPhone), it will feel like something completely new for those who want to pay less and get more.
Apple recognizes the demand for phones with larger screens and larger batteries that allow you to enjoy content in a more immersive way and for longer. Therefore, I have no doubt that customers will respond positively with their dollars. In fact, it will not be a surprise if the iPhone 14 Max becomes the best-selling iPhone 14 model (especially if the Pro models become more expensive).
iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will receive new-old rear camera hardware, but brand new 12MP selfie shooter
14 is for the influential!
As I like to point out, Apple loves to “recycle” Pro iPhone hardware by adapting it to the new vanilla iPhone, and I don’t expect it to be any different this year. In terms of camera hardware, the iPhone 13 borrows exactly the same sensors from the iPhone 12 Pro Max for 2020, and it makes sense that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will occupy the main and ultra-wide-angle cameras of the iPhone 13 Pro. not iPhone 13, but iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Anyway, this is good news for those who may want to buy a vanilla iPhone 14 model – this one will enjoy the flagship camera hardware. Of course, the flagship class for 2021, but still… The reason why Apple can be more generous to its budget-oriented users, because the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max get brand new 48MP cameras, which will be enough to distinguish the cheaper from the cheaper expensive models thanks to features like naturally 8K video, a larger main sensor and more detailed photos in general. Everyone wins. Supposed. An exception to Apple’s hardware recycling policy will be the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max selfie cameras, which are said to receive the much-needed upgrade to a brand new 12MP sensor with a wider f / 1.9 aperture with autofocus. This will help you and your friends stay in focus when taking photos and videos of yourself, and provide improved quality in low light.
Bottom line: Do you have to get an iPhone 14 … an iPhone 13, or … wait for an iPhone 15?
To USB C or not to USB C?
Of course, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max stick to the same old slot and are even expected to use the same A15 Bionic chip that is in the iPhone 13. Then again, the slot will contain the same Face ID that is on iPhone 14 Pro (love it or hate it) and as we found out, the 8-core GPU A15 Bionic chip from iPhone 13 Pro will support you for years to come.
Also, the iPhone 13 Pro’s cameras are still amazing and will go well with Apple’s $ 800 iPhone 14. You also get a brand new selfie shooter – the same as the iPhone 14 Pro.
The budget battery life of the iPhone is also expected to set new records, thanks to the iPhone 14 Max, and I’m sure millions of iPhone customers will appreciate this and vote with their credit cards.
Get an iPhone 13 instead of an iPhone 14?
For those who like to shop for an iPhone from places like eBay, 2022 will be your lucky year, as you won’t miss much by choosing last year’s iPhone. If there’s a new selfie shooter and a bigger iPhone 14 Max (with a bigger battery) isn’t tempting for you, there’s no reason not to get an iPhone 13 for $ 200-400 less, depending on the deal you might find. . The same chip, almost the same cameras, the same design … that’s pointless for those on a budget.
Miss iPhone 14 and wait for iPhone 15 (with USB-C)?
Oh, boy. The big one. At least in my book. After centuries of “leaks” and rumors, the iPhone 15 is now expected to switch to USB-C thanks to new European legislation (not yet completed), and this …
