WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania County – Police are investigating a shooting involving an officer that killed a man in Washington County on Saturday.
According to police, the soldiers responded to a mall in Washington County for a signal of theft from Rural King. Police have gathered information about the car of the suspect who fled the scene. A police officer saw the car in Mount Pleasant and stopped traffic on Westland Road on Main Street.
Police said the driver was detained during the stop, but the passenger, identified as 26-year-old Denis Fonoimoana of Washington County, refused to get out of the car. Phonoymoana brandished a firearm during a verbal battle with the soldier, also refusing to drop his pistol when told.
The officer fired his pistol, which hit Phonoymoana.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The soldier involved is charged with administrative duties under Pennsylvania State Police regulations.
The Washington County District Attorney’s Office was notified and responded to the scene.
This investigation is ongoing.
