Lead and mercury

The management of lead and mercury exposure in BC is a responsibility shared by the BCCDC, regional health authorities and clinicians.

In British Columbia, all publicly funded lead and mercury tests are reported to the BCCDC. The environmental services of the BCCDC, in cooperation with regional health authorities, monitor cases of elevated levels of lead and mercury, where necessary, and investigate unusual results that may indicate a threat to public health.

The BCCDC also assists clinicians in managing and investigating lead and mercury exposure. Guidelines are included here in the attached documents. The Drugs and Poisons Information Center is also able to provide support and guidance to clinicians managing lead and mercury exposure.

BCCDC examined the extent to which exposure to lead in drinking water in kindergartens and schools of BC has an adverse effect on children’s health and assessed the need and available opportunities to reduce lead in drinking water in kindergartens and schools.
