Although applauding for opposing teams, a proposal from a Flames fan in Game 4 of the Battle of Alberta received a resounding “yes” from the loving Oilers bride.
Tessa Monias and Paiden Partaker were at Rodgers Place on Tuesday night for their respective teams when Partaker said he was approached by an operator.
“He says, ‘Hey, buddy, I see your girlfriend is a fan of Edmonton. When the Oilers score, I’ll point the camera at you and they’ll blur you out,'” he said.
At this point, Partaker said he whispered in the cameraman’s ear, “when the Oilers score, I’ll propose to my girlfriend.”
With a shocked nod from the operator, the plan was in place. Partaker didn’t know he didn’t have to wait long. Just 21 seconds in the first period, Ryan Newgent-Hopkins opened the scoring, causing Partaker to fall to one knee much earlier than expected.
“She was so busy watching and applauding for her team,” he said. She didn’t even notice I fell to my knees.
“I was shocked and I couldn’t believe it, it was just amazing,” Monias said. “I still can’t believe it.”
Partaker expected hiccups here and there, but there were no skeptics nearby.
“I expected to be frozen by at least one Edmonton Euler fan who said, ‘Don’t do it, he’s a Calgary Flames fan,’ but the fans around us actually just felt like family,” Partaker said. “They greeted us and rejoiced for us.
The team rivalry between the couple is deeply rooted, everyone applauds for their father’s favorite team. Calgary for Partaker, Edmonton for Monias.
“It made us strong because we had to hear hatred from both sides,” Partaker laughed.
Partaker said his plan, if the Oilers do not score, is to make an offer in the final seconds of the third period.
“It would have happened no matter what,” Partaker said.
