Calgary Flames makes final requests to Johnny Godreau while a free agency is set up

After the Calgary Flames season is over, the franchise can focus on one of the biggest questions in its history: will the waiting free agent Johnny Godrot sign with the club or will the star test the free agency?

For his part, Godreau reiterated his love for the city on Saturday.

“I’ve been here for 11 years and I haven’t achieved that end goal, and it’s been a long time since they won here, so I think it would be very special to win the Cup here,” he said.

“It’s something I’ve dreamed of all my life, and Calgary is a great place to do it.”

Calgary is the only NHL team he knew, and even Godreau didn’t seem ready for the opportunity to wear a different sweater.

“That’s all I’ve known for the last 11 years and it’s kind of a big decision here and I’m just going to try to figure out what’s best for me and my family and move on,” he said.

“But Calgary is a special place for me, and I really, really love it here.”

Brad Treleving and Godreau’s agent, Lewis Gross, have kept conversations out of the public eye this season. With the emergence of the free agency, the urgency to get an answer from Godroy only increased.

“I said that – and I told John – I think he’s Calgary Flame and we want to make him Calgary Flame for a long time,” Treleving said.

“We will do our best to make this happen. We saw what he was capable of. I have believed in this man since the day I walked in the door here. Of course, this is an important part of the business that we need to take care of. “

His teammates also performed throughout the season, including two-time Stanley Cup champion Blake Coleman, who spoke about how he can be remembered.

“He’s such a big part of this team,” Coleman said.

“In my conversations with him, [I am] trying to make him understand what legacy he could leave in Calgary if he stayed. You can probably already put his T-shirt in the beams. Another eight years for Johnny, he would be cemented forever. And I think that’s something that’s important to him. “

Despite the scale of the moment, Godreau did not dwell on the future during the Edmonton series.

“I was not sitting in the locker room holding my T-shirt or looking up in the stands,” he said.

“It’s something I really didn’t think of.”

Gaudreau is just one of several major contracts that Treliving has to maneuver through in the off-season. Ambulance Matthew Tkachuk has also been out of his career for a year and needs a new contract annually from an unlimited free agency. Tkachuk said he would be ready to stay in Calgary for the long term.

“Absolutely,” he said. “I liked it here. I grew up here. ”

“At the end of the day, you live in a world of limited size, where you have 23 mouths to feed,” Trelling said of the two major contracts. “You treat everyone fairly, but not everyone is treated equally. Or everyone would do the same. It’s a puzzle. “

What is clear is that the Flames will offer the amount needed to keep the number 13 in red and white. It remains to be seen whether Godro will commit. Saturday’s comments hinted at optimism.

“You can say on Twitter – my uncle, my father, my mother, my sisters, my brother, everyone loves Calgary,” he said.

The Calgary group seems to have accepted the result, whether he is a friend or foe of the fall.

“It’s a business and we all understand it,” Coleman said.

“I didn’t know I would be in Calgary last season. Who knows what awaits him in the future. “
