The Minister of Justice said that the construction of a replacement HMP is getting closer

The province is approaching the construction of the long-awaited HMP replacement.

That’s according to Justice Minister John Hogan, who says the site for the new facility has already been determined in the St. John area. Hogan says the new facility will accommodate a more modern approach to correction – far from the approach used in the mid-1800s, when part of the current penitentiary system was originally built.

He says plans are currently being developed and they are working with stakeholders on what the facility should look like. They intend to include leisure and education programs in the new design, as well as health and mental health facilities.

There is currently no construction schedule available.
