1 killed, 1 injured in a hang gliding accident in the SF Bay Area

A man was killed and a woman was seriously injured Monday in a hang gliding accident at a park in the San Francisco Bay Area, officials said.

The incident happened around noon in the park of Ed R. Levin County in Milpitas, when two people were flying in tandem with hang gliding and the glider crashed on a hillside, the fire department in Milpitas said.

The couple took off from the 1750 launch pad, the highest launch site in the park, the fire department said in a press release.

The man died on the spot and the woman was taken by air to a trauma center, the fire department said.

“The terrain is very rugged,” Galahad Zamora, chief of the Milpitas fire brigade, told KTVU. “It’s a one-lane road to get to this place. This has created some challenges for our equipment and staff to get there and make contact with the patient.”

Ed R. Levin County Park is a popular place for hang gliding in the San Francisco Bay Area and is one of five local sites managed by the Wings of Rogallo Northern California Hang Glider Association. The place is open for hang glider pilots of all levels. There are several requirements for hang gliding in the park, including membership in the American Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association and being under the guidance of an instructor or having the appropriate pilot rating and experience.

The sheriff of Santa Clara County is investigating the crash site.
