Three people were killed and at least 11 were injured in a shooting in Philadelphia late Saturday, authorities said.

Shortly before midnight, police officers patrolling a popular nightlife area heard gunfire and witnessed “several active shooters” shooting into a crowd, said Inspector DF Pace of the Philadelphia Police Department at a news conference early Sunday.

A police officer shot at one of the gunmen as he fired, but it is unclear whether the man was shot, Pace said. The man dropped his weapon and fled when he was shot, he added.

The location of the shooters is not known immediately, Pace said.

Of the 14 people who were shot and taken to nearby hospitals, three – two men and a woman – were pronounced dead on arrival, Pace told reporters.

“There were hundreds of people just enjoying South Street, like every weekend when this shooting broke out,” Pace said. “This investigation is ongoing,” he added.

Two weapons, both semi-automatic pistols, were found, Pace said. One of them had an extended magazine. “Multiple rounds of ammunition” were scattered around the South Street area, he added.

Police will continue to gather information and review CCTV footage in the busy area, he said.

The United States is celebrating Remembrance Day weekend with at least 12 mass shootings

A local edition of 6ABC showed videos of glass debris on the street and a police tape separating a busy shopping area. He also reported that Thomas Jefferson University Hospital had received several injured victims.

The shooting comes amid renewed outrage across the country by police chiefs and elected officials over gun violence and renewed pressure from President Biden on Congress to act on gun restrictions.

As violence marks America, local leaders are asking: Where will it hit next?
