Police charge second-degree murder in fatal stabbing in Winnipeg

Winnipeg police arrested and charged a second person with deadly stabbing in the city in early May.

Winnipeg police said on Friday that RCMP officers had arrested 19-year-old Joseph Bruce Evans at the Norwegian House in Mann. Evans was returned to Winnipeg and remanded in custody on charges of second-degree murder.

The accusation has not been proven in court.

The arrest comes nearly a month after police found the mortally wounded 31-year-old Richard Dominic Anthony Contois near the Slow Rebchuk Bridge. Contois was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Earlier, police arrested a 17-year-old man from Winnipeg, who is also facing second-degree murder charges. The accusation has not been verified in court.

Winnipeg police said earlier that Contoa had been attacked with a sharp weapon. His death is being investigated as murder. Police say Kontoa and the two arrested are believed to have been unknown before. Investigators believe the quarrel between them escalates to the point of contagion.

Days after his death, Kontoa Crystal’s mother told CTV News that her son, who was a father, had been separated from his family.

“(His children) will never bring their father there for their first dance, their wedding. You took everything from my grandson and granddaughter,” she told CTV News.
