Captured British fighters face trial in Russian-backed Donetsk world

Two Britons captured by Russian forces while fighting for Ukraine appeared in court in a separatist-controlled region days after it was announced they could face the death penalty.

Aiden Aslin and Sean Piner, along with Sadun Brahim, a Moroccan citizen, have been accused of being foreign mercenaries by Kremlin-backed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) officials. They were held in a metal cage on the first day of their trial in Donetsk, the regional capital.

The men were asked through an interpreter if they had been told about the charges against them, to which they replied “yes”.

Piner was captured in Mariupol, along with Aslin, as the port city was reduced to rubble by Russian forces.
