CEO Stefan Perrot spoke at a press conference on the report on the recommendations of Elections Canada from the 43rd and 44th general elections in Ottawa on Tuesday, June 7, 2022.
Canada’s chief election commissioner recommends changes to the law to combat foreign interference in elections and the spread of misinformation.
Stefan Perot is calling for a new crime of making false statements to undermine elections – for example, claiming that the results have been manipulated.
A report released today also suggests that lawmakers are banning the registration of hateful groups as political parties, which will give them the names and addresses of all voters.
The report calls for an update on electoral laws in the digital age and suggests that platforms be required to publish policies on how to deal with voter misleading content.
It also proposes stricter rules to stop third-country groups that support political parties or seek to influence elections receiving foreign funding.
The report proposes that MPs extend the current rules, designed to stop foreign interference during elections, to the period before the start of the campaign.
