ATM stolen from a Crime Spree gas station spanning from Bay Roberts to Evandale

Early yesterday morning, thieves committed a devastating crime spanning from Bay Roberts to Evandale. At one point, an excavator was used to smash a gas station in South River to remove the ATM inside.

Bay Roberts’ RCMP were first called to Ultramar in the South River around 3 a.m. Wednesday after a passer-by noticed significant damage to the building.

An excavator shovel was used to smash the front of the building, causing significant damage, and the ATM was removed from the scene.

Surveillance cameras show that the incident happened around 1:45 with the participation of two suspects with covered faces in a pickup truck. Traces of dragging the ground led officers to a nearby gravel pit, where police found an abandoned provincial government excavator.

The excavator and pickup were stolen from a Bay Roberts landfill earlier.

Holyrood RCMP later discovered a burned-out pickup truck around 3:15 a.m. that morning after a driver reported a large forest fire between Brigus Junction and Avondale Access.

Meanwhile, later that morning, officers received a report of damage caused by a burglary at Eastbound International Speedway and Concert Park in Avondale. The gate was broken and a number of buildings in the property were damaged by a vehicle. An ambulance arrived on the scene and a racing car in the property was severely damaged. Police found an ATM believed to be the same one taken from South River. It is believed that the excavator on the site was used to get the money inside.

Anyone with CCTV or CCTV footage is asked to contact Bay Roberts or Holyrood RCMP.
