Phil Foden won the PFA Young Player of the Year title for the second season in a row after playing a major role in the triumph for Manchester City’s Premier League title.

The 22-year-old Foden scored nine goals and five assists after City won their fourth crown in five seasons under manager Pep Guardiola.

The English international was selected for the award over Connor Gallagher, who impressed Crystal Palace while on loan from Chelsea, Reese James, also from Chelsea, Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa and the Arsenal duo Bucaio Sacca and Emil Smith Rowe.

Foden became the sixth player to win the PFA Young Player of the Year title, joining Ryan Giggs, Robbie Fowler, Wayne Rooney, Dele Ali and Lauren Hamp.

Ali was the last player to receive the award in consecutive seasons after achieving the feat in 2017.

Foden is one of Etihad’s most agile players and the decisive winners he struck against Brentford and Everton have proved how influential he can be for both the club and the country.

He was also named a young player of the season in the Premier League last month.

“I’m really honored to be honest, especially to win it consistently, which shows that I’ve come a long way this year with the consistency of my game and I’m really happy to win it again,” said Foden.

“All the best players in the world have to show consistency and continue to perform at a higher level, and this year I just tried to do that and I tried to help my team as much as possible – I was really happy with my performances this year.

“I hope I can win the grand prize in the future, but it’s all about taking small steps and improving. I always like to win individual prizes, it’s just nice to watch it and see how far you’ve come, so, yes, I’m really happy. ‘

Smith Rowe and Saka were key players in the improving team of Arsenal under the leadership of Mikel Arteta, who narrowly missed his opponent Tottenham Hotspur for a place in the top four of the Premier League and it looks like he will start in the future.

Ramsey made his way to Aston Villa under Steven Gerrard, playing only a cameo role in the 2020-21 season, while Gallagher’s good form at Selhurst Park led to his first call-up in England and subsequent three games.

James also enjoyed another solid season in the top class as a right back in the back line of Chelsea, as the Blues finished third under Thomas Tuchel.

Although voting already has state-of-the-art methods that involve nominating players online or through an app, the archaic early closing of polls comes despite the prizes, being held as a virtual event until tonight.

The PFA says the poll closed early due to logistical challenges in interviewing the winners, although given that no one will be attending the event, some doubt it should have been a priority.
