LIVE: M56 completely closed near Manchester airport due to vehicle fire – latest updates

A section of the M56 near Manchester Airport was completely closed this morning due to a car fire.

All lanes are currently closed on the east lane between junction 7 for Bowdon and junction six for Wilmslow Road. One lane is also closed on the west lane, according to Transport for Greater Manchester.

Drivers are urged to find another route. The delays increased until the incident with traffic queues filmed by highway cameras.

A tweet posted by TfGM reads: “M56 between J7 and J6. All lanes are closed for eastbound traffic.

“One lane is closed to west traffic. This is due to a vehicle fire.

“Look for an alternative route and leave extra time for your trip. Follow @HighwaysNWEST for updates.

Highways England said: “#M56 is closed east between J7 and J6 near #Manchester Airport due to a vehicle fire. More details will follow.”
