A Missouri woman earned $ 5.2 million in a deal with Geico after contracting a sexually transmitted disease.

The woman said she contracted the human papillomavirus (HPV) while having sex in a Geico-insured vehicle, and the company quickly found a request for payment from an unnamed woman.

She claims that because her partner did not take the necessary precautions and infected her in the insured car, her HPV infection should be covered by the policy.

The petition was submitted in February 2021 and was subsequently rejected by April of that year. After the offer for a final agreement of $ 1 million was rejected by Geico, the dispute went to arbitration.

An arbitrator from the Jackson County Court ruled in favor of the woman, recommending a payment of $ 5.2 million from Geico.

The Missouri Court of Appeals adjourned the arbitrator and refused to overturn the previous findings.

“During Geico’s intervention, liability and damages were determined by an arbitrator and confirmed by the court of first instance. “GEICO had no right to remove these issues again,” the court wrote.

The court wrote in its ruling that Geico may have managed to evade payment if they had protected the woman’s sexual partner, the owner of the insured car.

Instead, because they chose to refuse coverage, their path to redress was compromised.
