Fire crews were called to the chips fire at a home restaurant.
Fire chiefs praised the owners of the High Road, Benfleet business for their prompt action.
The crews were called to a store on High Road, South Benfleet, at 11:14 a.m. today.
The pan caught fire, but major damage was avoided thanks to the owner, who insulated the heat supply, used a powder fire extinguisher and quickly evacuated the premises.
Watchmaker Wayne Davy, fire station manager Rayleigh Weir, said: “The business owner did the right thing, saved a lot of damage to his premises and, more importantly, no one was injured.
“The fire was close when we arrived, so we just had to deal with it and clear the smoke. This really shows how important it is to have the right fire extinguishers, a smoke alarm and to know exactly what to do.
