Ukrainian forces withstood Russian artillery and air strikes that wiped out the city.
The defense ministry said there were now “intense street-to-street battles” and that “both sides are likely to suffer large numbers of casualties”.
In an interview with Ukrainian media, Luhansk Governor Sergei Haidai said that Ukraine is simply superior to Russia.
“The only problem in Ukraine is the lack of long-range artillery. If there was enough artillery and ammunition for it, we would repel the enemy’s artillery and I can guarantee that our military will clear the city completely in two days,” he said.
