Rudy Giuliani faces ethical allegations over Trump’s electoral role

WASHINGTON (AP) – Rudy Giuliani, one of Donald Trump’s main lawyers during the then-president’s failed efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, must now face charges of professional ethics, the latest slap in the face after his career licenses in New York and the District of Columbia.

The Office of Disciplinary Counsel, the disciplinary branch of the District of Columbia Bar Association, has filed charges against the former federal prosecutor and mayor of New York, alleging that he encouraged baseless allegations of voter fraud in Pennsylvania. The lawsuit was filed on June 6 and went public on Friday.

Giuliani’s allegations in support of a lawsuit over Trump’s campaign to overturn Pennsylvania are questionable. The lawsuit, which seeks to cancel up to 1.5 million ballots in the mail, was rejected by the court.

The lawyer’s office said that Giuliani’s behavior was in violation of Pennsylvania’s rules of professional conduct “in that he filed a lawsuit and pointed out issues in it without negligent grounds in law and the facts and” that he participated in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice ”

The lawyer asked the DC Board of Appeals for professional responsibility to address the issue. Giuliani has 20 days to respond, according to the documentation. An attempt to reach Giuliani’s lawyer on Saturday was unsuccessful.

The move is the latest against Giuliani for his role in debunking Trump’s claims that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulent.

Last June, an appeals court stopped him from practicing law in New York because he made false statements while trying to get the courts to overturn Trump’s loss. A bar disciplinary commission asked the court to suspend his license on the grounds that he had violated the rules of professional conduct, as he theorized that the election had been stolen by fraud.

The DC Bar Association suspended him last July, although the practical consequences of this action are questionable, given that Giuliani’s license in Washington has been inactive since 2002.

News of the lawyer’s actions follows the first public hearing by the House of Representatives’ commission to investigate the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. Giuliani met for hours with the committee last month.
