MADISON, Wisconsin – Madison Chantler’s goal in the middle of the third period on Sunday was a victory after Canada beat Finland 2-1 to qualify for the gold medal final at the Women’s Under-18 Hockey World Championships.
Jade Iginla gave Canada a 1-0 lead at 15:04 in the first period with their first international goal, which remained until Tilly Keranen put Finland on the board at 6:52 from the second period
Canada overtook Finland 45-10 and had only four light penalties in the fast-paced race. Marie Petersen made nine saves in the win.
“It was an extraordinary experience [the team] off the ice and we have a very close-knit group, “said Canadian coach Howie Draper of Edmonton.
“It took a little longer than we could have expected, but we are starting to come together as an ice team. I think we are getting better with each match and I hope that tomorrow (Monday) will be our best match in the tournament we have been shooting for. “
Chantler was excited that her goal pushed her team to the gold final.
“We had good coverage in the defense zone and then (Karel Prefontaine) jumped (the puck) towards me from the board and I took the chance to drive from their defense, shoot and she came in,” Chantler said.
“I’m so proud of this team. We wouldn’t have made it (to get to the gold medal game) if we hadn’t all worked together. The energy is pretty high in the locker room.”
After the match, Jocelyn Amos, Sarah McIchern and Sarah Swiderski were named the three best players of the Canadian team in the tournament.
Canada will play for gold on Monday at La Bahn Arena against the winner of Sunday’s late match between Sweden and the United States.
