A flood warning has been issued for part of a river in southeastern British Columbia, and many other waterways in the province are under surveillance as torrential rain has the potential to push violent rivers and streams over their shores.

The River Forecasting Center has published a flood warning for the Elk River near Ferney and added flood monitoring for rivers around Invermere, Radium, Revelstoke and west to Shushuap, while maintaining flood monitoring for rivers from the Caribou to East Kutenai.

Updated warnings and clocks follow precipitation warnings and special weather forecasts for the southeast corner of British Columbia, as the coming storm brings up to 80 millimeters of rain in the Elk Valley and East Kutenai until late Tuesday.

The unstable weather also caused a warning of snowfall for the highest heights of Highway 3, as weather forecasters say 10 to 15 centimeters of snow is expected to cover the route between Lake Christina and Creston until late Tuesday.

High-flow warnings were also issued early Monday through Okanagan, the Border and Similcamin, and similar recommendations remain for the Thompson region and the entire Fraser River corridor from Queensnel south to the ocean.

No evacuations have been ordered, but signals are still in place for Six Mile, a small community near Duhamel Creek north of Nelson, 18 properties on the Tulamin River west of Tulamin and about 40 properties on the Fraser River in the eastern Fraser Valley area of Kent.

Earlier reports of homes around Smithers and Terrace in northwestern British Columbia were removed over the weekend as levels of the Bulkley, Skeena and other northwest rivers dwindled.

Waterways in the northeast BC remain a problem as the flood warning for the Liard River from Fort Nelson to the Yukon border continues, and high-flow warnings remain published for other northern rivers and streams.

The center says northern rivers that showed signs of leveling on Saturday could rise again due to rain over the weekend.
