London will be hotter than Costa Rica on Friday

Parts of the Southeast, London and Wales could reach at least 27 ° C and rise to 34 ° C on Friday, hotter than Portugal, Jamaica, Costa Rica, the Canary Islands and Cyprus.

Sunbathers have been warned in advance not to “overdo it” as temperatures rise.

Craig Snell, a spokesman for the Met Office, said: “Very high UV levels are expected in the south this week, which means people really need to avoid being in the sun at noon.

“Wearing sunglasses, a shirt, a hat and sunscreen are essential to protect your eyes and skin, and drinking plenty of water is important – prolonged sun exposure can be dangerous.

“People need to avoid overdoing it. We all love sunny weather, but common sense can help you avoid unpleasant sunburn.

The heat in the UK is no reason to celebrate

Much of the UK’s breathless press reports that the nation is ready for “the hottest summer ever” with “at least five hot flashes” on the horizon.

Newspapers published photos of sunbathers in bikinis enjoying the sun, quoting James Madden, a weather forecaster for Exacta Weather, who said: “The general summer forecast now points to at least four or five major heat waves.

But what many of these joyous news reports do not mention is that these heat waves are a direct result of climate change – and can cause disease and death.

The RSPCA issues a warning

The RSPCA has issued a warning to pet owners about incoming heat.

Esme Wheeler, an RSPCA dog welfare specialist, said: “The truth is that walking dogs in hot weather can be a silent killer.

While most would never leave our dogs in a car on a hot day or even take their dogs for a really long walk in the heat, many people can still put their dogs at risk even for a short walk or take them to places like flights and beaches with little or no shade.

“We have long insisted that dogs die in hot cars, but this year we emphasize that dogs also die in hot walks. The message remains very simple – never leave a dog in a hot car because “not long” is too long, and when it comes to walking, “if in doubt, do not go out.”
