Mace defeats Trump-backed main rival in South Carolina

Republican Republic Nancy Mace (RS.C.) is said to have defeated former Republican Republic of South Carolina Katie Arrington on Tuesday, handing former President Donald Trump his last major primary loss.

The Associated Press announced the race at 11:13 p.m. ET.

Mace, a member of the House of Representatives in the first term who defeated former MP Joe Cunningham (DS.C.) in 2020, drew the anger of the former president last year after she criticized him for his role in the January 6, 2021 uprising. in the US Capitol.

Although she was not among the 10 Republicans in the House of Representatives who voted to impeach Trump after the attack, he still promised to campaign against her, supporting Arrington to lead her in the primary.

Unlike many Republican lawmakers who openly criticized Trump after the Capitol uprising, Mace tried to present himself as a believer in the former president’s agenda, while acknowledging disagreements with Trump’s most ardent supporters over the Jan. 6 attack. .

Arrington, meanwhile, put Trump’s support first in his campaign and attacked Mace for having no connection to voters in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District.

In the end, Trump’s approval was not enough to push Arrington over the finish line. Recent polls suggest Mace has a comfortable lead over Arrington, whose loss on Tuesday was just the latest on a growing list of primary failures for the former president as he weighs in on a potential White House nomination in 2024.
