OTTAWA – New polls show that Liberal and New Democrat voters believe Jean Charest or Patrick Brown would be the best leader of the Federal Conservative Party.
The data, published by research firm Leger, is based on an online survey of 1,528 Canadians last weekend using computer-assisted web-based interviewing technology.
No margin of error can be attributed to it, as Internet-based surveys are not considered random samples.
The poll asked respondents which of the six candidates they believe will be the best leader of the party, which will present its new leader on September 10th.
Leger Executive Vice President Christian Burke says one of the problems they face when polling Canadians for the party’s leadership race is that about a third seem indifferent.
The data show that 58% of respondents said they did not know or did not choose any of the above when asked which candidate would be the best leader of the Conservatives.
As for conservative voters, the poll shows that 23 percent of respondents said they did not know, and only eight percent did not choose any of the above.
Tory voters who responded to the poll show that 44% believe Pierre Poalievre, a longtime Ottawa lawmaker known for his attacks on the government and the Bank of Canada on inflation, would be the best party member. leader.
Charest, the former prime minister of Quebec, came in by far second with 14 percent of Conservative voters, according to the poll, while the other four candidates ranked much lower.
Looking at respondents who support other political parties, Leger’s data show that 25% of federal liberals and NDP voters believe Charest would be the best Conservative leader.
He also estimates that 11% of both Liberals and the NDP will choose Brown, who is mayor of Brampton, Ontario, and previously led the Progressive Conservatives in Ontario.
In contrast, data show that only six percent of Liberal and NDP supporters believe that Poliever would be the best choice.
The findings come as one of the main challenges facing Conservative contenders if they win will be to increase support for the party ahead of the next federal election, especially in affluent Ontario.
“The only way they can win Ontario back and do better in Quebec is to actually distance voters from the Liberal Party and the NDP,” Burke said.
Leger’s data also shows that 57% of respondents who support the right-wing People’s Party of Canada believe that Poliever should be the next leader of the Conservatives.
