Phillips House: Two brothers admit to killing British journalist and his companion – reports | World news

Two brothers have admitted to killing British journalist Dom Phillips and his companion Bruno Pereira in the Amazon rainforest.

Mr Phillips and Mr Pereira, a Brazilian indigenous specialist, disappeared more than a week ago in a remote part of the Ithaca River.

Band News reported on Wednesday that Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira and his brother Autumn da Costa de Oliveira have admitted to killing them.

The band also said federal police said the suspects dismembered the bodies, set them on fire and threw them into a ditch.

During his confession, Autumn Oliveira apparently drove police to the scene.

Mr Phillips, 57, and Mr Pereira, 41, were last seen on 5 June near the entrance to the local Havari Valley, which borders Peru and Colombia.

Allegations of torture

The brothers, both 41-year-old fishermen, were detained at the Atalaya police station near Norte, the nearest town.

According to locals who were with them, Amarildo Oliveira pulled out a rifle against Mr Phillips and Mr Pereira the day before they disappeared.

However, he denies doing anything wrong and claims that the military police tortured him in order to obtain confessions, his family said.

Mr Phillips has reported on Brazil for more than 15 years for newspapers including The Guardian, the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Financial Times.
