Vancouver man gets 3-year sentence after stabbing Tim Hortons

Police said a Vancouver man had been sentenced to prison in connection with an unprovoked stabbing in a cafe in downtown Vancouver earlier this year.

David Maureen, 28, pleaded guilty Tuesday to aggravated assault and received a three-year sentence, according to police.

Vancouver police said at the time that the victim was at Tim Hortons at the Harbor Center on Jan. 22 around 6:20 a.m. when a man approached him from behind and repeatedly stabbed him in the back.

The victim, a 25-year-old woman with a tourist visa from Mexico, was rushed to hospital, police said. He was in danger of death, but was expected to survive. Police on Wednesday did not provide up-to-date information on the victim’s condition.

Police said Maureen fled the scene after the attack and was later identified and arrested after a video of the attack was released in the hope that it would help the public identify the suspect.

Police then said there had been a series of unprovoked violence in the city in the past month.

Sergeant Steve Addison said that data from September 1, 2020 to August 31, 2021 show that there were 1,555 unprovoked attacks by strangers, involving 1,705 victims.
