Netflix irritates first glance at Anna de Armas as Marilyn Monroe – Hollywood reporter

Netflix has released the first look at the NC-17 of the Blonde, screenwriter and director Andrew Dominic, who looks at the story of Marilyn Monroe.

Starring Anna de Armas as Monroe and based on Joyce Carol Oates’ fictional novel of the same name, the film is a rethinking of the professional and personal life of the enduring Hollywood icon.

Beginning with an unstable childhood like Norma Jean, the fictional twist follows Monroe as she rises to the star both inside and outside of her romantic entanglements. The film is an active blurring of facts and fiction that explores the growing divide between Monroe’s public and personal selves.

The one-minute teaser releases a captivating song from Monroe’s hit Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend over flashing footage of some of Monroe’s more iconic moments in the spotlight, as well as the huge media attention and loneliness of being a star.

In an interview with Netflix’s Queue, de Armas called Dominic’s ambitions for the film “very clear from the start – to present a version of Marilyn Monroe’s life through her lens.”

“He wanted the world to experience what it felt like to be not only Marilyn, but Norma Jean,” she continued. “I found this to be the boldest, most innocent and feminist attitude to her history I have ever seen.

As for the screenwriter-director, this is a study of someone “deeply traumatized”, which leads to a rift between her public and personal selves, which for a “famous person” that often plays out in public, in ways that can cause additional trauma “As a result, the film is very concerned about its relationship with itself and this other person, Marilyn, who is both her armor and the thing that threatens to engulf her.”

De Armas said that for the 47-day photo, which requires several hours in the hair and makeup chair, she not only read Joyce’s novel, but studied hundreds of photos, videos, audio recordings and movies. The result is a film that “is not linear or conventional; it’s meant to be a sensory and emotional experience. “

She adds: “There are times when we are inside her body and mind and this will allow the audience to experience what it is like to be Norma and Marilyn at the same time.

The director also says the film is more than his NC-17 rating. “I seem to get into situations where people find me provocative, but that’s never what I’m trying to do,” he explained. “I just try to say it as clearly as possible. My ambition is to make you fall in love with Marilyn.

The film is not the first NC-17 title to air on Netflix, but it was one of the first streaming titles produced by the Motion Picture Association.

The cast also includes Adrian Brody, Bobby Cannavale, Evan Williams, Julian Nicholson, Xavier Samuel, Scott McNairy, Gareth Delahunt and Lucy DeVito. Blonde was produced by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Tracy Landon and Scott Robertson, with Christina O as executive producer. The film will be released on Netflix on September 23.
